How to book a hotel room without a credit card (2026)

Big hotel groups still ask for a card number to guarantee most bookings. Here are the seven real ways around it. Four are classic: paying at the hotel, a debit or prepaid card, a bank transfer and a gift card. The others are a card authorization form, a hotel that takes crypto, and booking with crypto on StaySats. Each one has a limit, and the check-in deposit is a separate step.

Quick answer

How do I book a hotel without a credit card?

Use a debit card, a gift card or a bank transfer, or prepay in crypto. As of October 13, 2026, all 10 groups in our table (Hyatt: search extract) ask for a card number to book or guarantee online. StaySats takes crypto instead. Paying ahead with StaySats does not remove the hotel's incidental deposit at check-in.

Seven ways to book without a credit card, and the limit of each

Can I reserve a room and pay at the hotel?

Yes, with a flexible rate, but most groups still take a card number first. Hilton asks for a credit or debit card number as a guarantee and charges it at booking only for prepaid rates, deposits or late cancellations. Wyndham lets you pay on arrival for some rates, yet says a credit card is required for all online reservations.

Best Western requires a credit card for all online bookings and charges it on arrival, unless the hotel asks for prepayment. Choice uses the card to hold your room until 7 a.m. the morning after arrival. Accor asks for valid bank details to secure most bookings, and you can give them by phone instead of online. The card is the safety net for a no-show, even if you pay in cash later.

Will a debit or prepaid card work?

A debit card often works; a prepaid card is a gamble. Hilton accepts major credit and debit cards for bookings, and Accor asks for a "credit/debit card". Choice mentions a credit or debit card in its late-arrival rule: a card without funds can cost you the room.

The main limit is the hold. A debit hold takes real money out of your available balance until the hotel releases it. Marriott says banks usually take 3 to 7 business days after check-out. No group page we read names prepaid cards, so ask the hotel before you count on one.

Can I pay a hotel by bank transfer?

Sometimes, but only by arrangement with one hotel. No large group offers a bank transfer at online checkout among the payment methods we read. Marriott's help center says direct billing is set up by contacting the hotel or resort directly.

Ask the hotel by email for an invoice and its bank details before you travel. International transfers can take days and carry bank fees. Keep proof of payment, and confirm that the hotel received the funds before you arrive.

Can I use a hotel gift card bought with crypto?

Yes, but only to pay the bill at the hotel. Bitrefill sells Marriott and Best Western gift cards for crypto, and both listings say they work only in the United States. Marriott says a gift card cannot book or guarantee a reservation. It pays the final bill on arrival or departure, and a credit card is still asked for extras.

So a gift card helps with the payment, not with the guarantee or the deposit. Compare both routes on our gift cards vs hotel booking page.

Can someone else pay for my room?

Yes, with a card authorization form. Marriott and Choice tell the payer to ask the hotel for this form, which lets the hotel charge a card without the cardholder present. IHG hotels publish the form on ihg.com and ask for it at least 3 days before check-in.

The payer needs a card, so this moves the problem rather than solving it. The hotel may still ask you for a deposit at the front desk.

Do any hotels accept crypto directly?

A few, and no large group. The Kessler Collection lets guests pay through BitPay at check-out, per its own page. PRINCESS No.3 in Plochingen, Germany, says stays can be paid in bitcoin. Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Accor, Hyatt and Wyndham list no crypto. Booking.com and Airbnb don't either: see whether Booking.com takes crypto and Airbnb's payment options.

The dated list is our crypto acceptance index. These hotels are rare, so most travellers who hold crypto book through a seller that converts it. Sellers differ on refunds and fees: see how crypto hotel sellers compare.

How to book a hotel with crypto on StaySats

No credit card at any step. Paying in crypto may be a taxable event in your country. Check local rules.

  1. Top up your balance

Send BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC from $25. Send USDT on TRC-20 only to the TRC-20 address shown, as funds sent on another network may be lost.

  2. Search a city and pick a room

You pay the price found live for your dates, in US dollars, for the whole stay. Taxes and fees are included when the hotel publishes them; the final total is confirmed with the hotel before you are charged.

  3. Book in the name on your passport

We ask for the lead guest's name and an email address; no ID upload and no selfie at checkout. We pay the hotel in local currency.

  4. Held, then charged

The total is held on your balance while we book the room on request. Your balance is charged only when the hotel confirmation number is issued. A higher total needs your agreement; if we can't confirm, the full amount is released.

What happens at check-in without a credit card?

You may still need a card or cash for the deposit. Booking without a card solves the payment, not the hold for extras. As of October 13, 2026, 6 of the 10 groups in our check-in table ask for a card at check-in. Only Marriott names a cash deposit.

Email the hotel before you arrive and ask whether it takes a debit card or cash. The full table, with release times, is on our check-in without a credit card page. See how it works for the steps of a StaySats booking.

Booking without a credit card: questions

Can I book a hotel with only a debit card?

Often yes. Hilton accepts major credit and debit cards for bookings, and Accor asks for a credit or debit card. The limit is the hold at check-in: it blocks real money in your account until the hotel releases it. Marriott says that usually takes 3 to 7 business days.

Can you check into a hotel without a credit card?

Often, but not everywhere. As of October 13, 2026, 6 of the 10 hotel groups in our table ask for a card at check-in. Some hotels take a debit card or a cash deposit instead. Ask the hotel before you arrive; the rules by group are in our check-in table.

Can I book a hotel with cash only?

Rarely online. The large groups we checked ask for a card number to guarantee an online booking. Some hotels accept cash at the desk: Wyndham says paying in cash varies by hotel. Call the hotel first, and expect a cash deposit on top of the room price.

Can I book a Marriott or Hilton hotel without a credit card?

Not directly online. Marriott asks for a valid credit card to guarantee a booking, and Hilton asks for a credit or debit card number. A Marriott gift card bought with crypto can pay the bill at the hotel, not the guarantee. Through StaySats, you prepay in crypto when the hotel appears in our live search.

Is a gift card a good way to pay for a hotel with crypto?

It works for some brands, with limits. Marriott and Best Western gift cards are sold for crypto on Bitrefill, and both listings say they work only in the United States. A gift card pays the bill at the hotel but cannot guarantee a Marriott booking, and a card is still asked for extras.

Does StaySats need a credit card?

No. StaySats takes crypto only, from a balance topped up from $25. There is no card, no ID upload and no selfie at checkout. Your balance is held, not charged, until the hotel confirmation number is issued. The hotel may still ask for a card or cash deposit at check-in.

What if the hotel cancels a booking I paid in crypto?

With StaySats, if the hotel can't host you, you get 100% of the stay back: in USDT or USDC within 7 days of your request, or as balance credit if you choose it. If the hotel never confirms, the full amount is released to your balance at once. Our refunds page shows every case, including cancellations you make yourself.

Can I book a hotel in Spain this way?

Not with StaySats yet. Hotels in Spain are paused until our registration with Spain's guest register, SES.HOSPEDAJES, is done. Royal Decree 933/2021 requires it from booking intermediaries. Debit cards, bank transfers and gift cards still work with Spanish hotels that accept them.
