Do hotels in Tokyo accept crypto at the desk?
Rarely. BTC Map lists 51 places within 25 km of central Tokyo, 46 of them verified since 2025, and 0 hotels (October 12, 2026). A listing is not proof that a place accepts crypto today. Tokyo is one of the five top destinations of crypto travellers reported by Travala and Binance Pay for 2024. The gap between that demand and desk payments is wide.
With StaySats, the hotel never needs a crypto option. You pay us from your balance before the trip, and the hotel receives a normal prepaid booking in yen.
Where to stay in Tokyo?
Tokyo is a city of rail lines: stay a short walk from a station on the line your airport train serves.
- Shinjuku: a huge rail hub on the JR Yamanote Line, with many business hotels and late-night dining.
- Shibuya: shopping and nightlife around the scramble crossing, with direct trains to Yokohama.
- Tokyo Station, Marunouchi and Ginza: offices, department stores and the Shinkansen; the Narita Express stops at Tokyo Station.
- Asakusa and Ueno: older neighbourhoods with Sensō-ji temple and Ueno Park; the Keisei Skyliner from Narita stops at Ueno.
- Shinagawa and Hamamatsuchō: the closest districts to Haneda, by the Keikyū line or the Tokyo Monorail.
What is added to the bill in Tokyo?
A small Tokyo accommodation tax, collected by the hotel. Until March 31, 2027, there is no tax below ¥10,000 per person per night. It is ¥100 from ¥10,000 to ¥14,999, and ¥200 from ¥15,000.
From April 1, 2027, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government replaces it with a 3% rate. It applies to room charges of ¥13,000 or more per person per night. The tax then also covers private lodgings (minpaku). Japan's 10% consumption tax applies to the room price. When the hotel collects the accommodation tax itself, it is confirmed with your StaySats booking.
Will the hotel ask for my passport or a deposit?
Yes for the passport, by law. Foreign guests with no address in Japan must give their nationality and passport number and show their passport for a copy (rule in force since 2005-04-01). The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare publishes this request in English, Korean and Japanese, so hotels can show it to guests. It is a duty of the hotel, not a check of your booking.
Deposits depend on the hotel. Your room is prepaid with StaySats, so you pay only extras on site. StaySats sends the hotel only the lead guest's name; the passport details are given at the desk. See hotel ID rules by country.
Is paying in crypto legal in Japan?
No local ban found in our sources (checked October 12, 2026). Few Tokyo hotels list crypto as a payment method. Booking ahead is the practical route: you pay StaySats in crypto, and we pay the hotel in yen.
Paying in crypto may be a taxable event in your country. Check local rules before you spend coins that have gained value.
Which Tokyo airport is closer to my hotel?
Haneda (HND) is about 15 km from Tokyo Station in a straight line, Narita (NRT) about 57 km. From Haneda, the Keikyū line serves Shinagawa, and the Tokyo Monorail serves Hamamatsuchō. From Narita, the Narita Express reaches Tokyo Station, and the Keisei Skyliner reaches Nippori and Ueno.
Pick a hotel near the station your airport train serves, especially with luggage. Tokyo's large stations have many exits, so check which exit is closest to your hotel.
