Quick answer

How much tourist tax do hotels charge, city by city?

It depends on the city, and some charges are paid apart from the room. As of October 13, 2026, Bali's foreign tourist levy is IDR 150,000 per entry, paid to the province. Tokyo adds up to ¥200 per person per night. Paris charges €2.60 to €15.93 per adult per night. The StaySats table covers 14 cities.

Bali tourist tax (levy)

Every foreign tourist pays IDR 150,000 each time they enter Bali. The Bali provincial government calls it the Foreign Tourist Levy, or Pungutan bagi Wisatawan Asing. It has been collected since February 14, 2024. It is one flat charge per person and per entry, not a nightly tax, and it never sits in the room price.

Who pays the Bali levy, and how often?

Any visitor without Indonesian citizenship who comes to Bali as a tourist. The rule covers arrivals straight from abroad and arrivals through another part of Indonesia. One payment stays valid for the trip, until you leave Indonesia. If you enter Bali again on a later trip, you pay again. The exemption list in the regulation names no age group.

Who does not pay it?

Regional Regulation 2/2025 lists seven groups. The first five are exempt without any request:

  • crews of planes, ships and other transport;
  • holders of a KITAS or KITAP stay permit;
  • holders of a diplomatic or service visa;
  • holders of a family reunion visa;
  • holders of a student visa.

Holders of a golden visa, or of another visa issued by immigration, must apply in the Love Bali app. Visas meant for tourism do not qualify.

How do you pay it?

The province asks visitors to pay online before they leave home, on the Love Bali website or app. Three other ways are allowed:

  • On arrival: at the payment counters of Bali's airport and port.
  • During the stay: at a registered endpoint, such as some hotels, travel agents and tourist attractions. The money still goes through the Love Bali system to the province.
  • On departure: when you leave Bali, if you have not paid before.

The official FAQ lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB cards, bank transfer, virtual account, UnionPay and QRIS.

What proof do you get?

A levy voucher with a QR code. Officers scan the voucher or your passport at arrival gates, at endpoints and in occasional checks. Keep it until you leave Indonesia. A payment is not refunded, except a second payment for the same arrival date.

What if you do not pay?

The regulation lists an oral warning, a written warning, and refusal of service at tourist attractions. It sets no fine and no prison term.

Which rules set it?

Law 15/2023 on the Province of Bali is its basis. Bali Regional Regulation 6/2023 created the levy, and Regulation 2/2025 amended it from July 1, 2025. Governor Regulation 2/2024, amended by Regulation 25/2025 from July 1, 2025, sets how it is paid. On October 13, 2026, no change to the IDR 150,000 amount had been announced.

What hotel tax is on a Bali bill?

A regional tax on hotel services, called PBJT, separate from the levy. Law 1/2022 caps it at 10% of what the guest pays, and each regency or city sets its own rate. Denpasar, which includes Sanur, charges 10%. We could not read the official texts of Badung, home to Kuta and Seminyak, or Gianyar, home to Ubud. There, expect up to 10%.

Room hire pays this regional tax instead of Indonesian VAT. A service charge, if any, is set by each hotel: no national rate applies.

Japan and Tokyo accommodation tax

Tokyo's tax is small and depends on the room price per person. Until March 31, 2027, a night under ¥10,000 per person pays nothing. Between ¥10,000 and ¥14,999, the tax is ¥100, and from ¥15,000 it is ¥200. The price that counts is the room alone, service charge included. Meals, drinks, parking and consumption tax are left out. When guests share a room, the price is split per head first. There is no age rule, so a child pays once its share reaches ¥10,000.

What changes on April 1, 2027? Tokyo moves to 3% of the room-only price per person per night. Stays under ¥13,000 per person remain exempt. Above that line, the whole price is taxed: a ¥13,000 night means ¥390 (our calculation). Simple lodging houses and private rentals (minpaku) will pay it too. The Tokyo assembly passed the ordinance on March 27, 2026, and it was promulgated on July 1, 2026.

Who collects it? The hotel or ryokan. It can ask for the tax at the front desk, apart from a price you paid before the trip.

Departure tax. Japan's International Tourist Tax went from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 per departure on July 1, 2026. Eligible tickets issued by June 30, 2026 keep the old rate, and infants under 2 are exempt. Carriers collect it, usually in the ticket price, so it does not appear on a hotel bill.

Consumption tax. It is 10%: 7.8% national and 2.2% local. Prices shown to consumers must include it. The rule we read does not say whether a local accommodation tax must be included too.

What makes up the Paris tourist tax?

Four layers, and the largest one funds public transport. The city sets a base rate per adult per night by hotel class, such as €3.60 in a 5-star hotel. The department adds 10% of that base, and a regional surcharge of 15% goes to the Société des grands projets (SGP). Since January 1, 2024, a further 200% goes to Île-de-France Mobilités, the regional transport authority. The 5-star base of €3.60 thus becomes €11.70 a night.

Minors are exempt on proof of age. Lodgings without a star rating pay 5% of the nightly cost per person before VAT, plus the surcharges, up to €15.93. The city says the 2027 grid will match 2026, unless the law changes. Rooms in classified hotels also carry 10% VAT.

When will London get a visitor levy?

Not before a new law, and no date is set. On September 10, 2026, the UK government said mayoral and foundation strategic authorities in England will get the power. The Greater London Authority is one of them. A levy would be a percentage of the room cost, meals excluded, and the accommodation provider would owe it.

The government plans no cap on the rate, and local leaders could not cap the number of nights. Exemptions would depend on the type of lodging, not on the guest. Each area must consult locally first. On October 13, 2026, the UK Parliament bills site listed no visitor levy bill. A London Assembly letter of August 21, 2026 still treats a London levy as the Mayor's choice.

Today, a London room carries 20% VAT. From the 29th day of a continuous stay, VAT applies only to the part of the price that is not for lodging.

How do New York City hotel taxes add up?

Three charges stack on a room of $40 or more a night. Sales tax is 8.875%, which includes 0.375% for the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District. The city's hotel room occupancy tax adds 5.875% of the rent and $2 per room per day. The state hotel unit fee adds $1.50 per unit per day. For a single room, that makes 14.75% of the rent plus $3.50 a night.

Cheaper rooms pay a smaller fixed city charge: 50 cents from $10, $1 from $20 and $1.50 from $30. In a suite, the city's $2 charge applies to each room. A guest who stays 180 days in a row or more becomes a permanent resident and stops paying the occupancy tax. The 5.875% rate was extended on November 17, 2023, until November 30, 2027. A travel website that resells a room counts as a hotel operator, so it collects these taxes when you prepay.

How do Miami and Miami Beach hotel taxes differ?

By town: 13% in most of Miami-Dade, 14% in Miami Beach and 11% in Surfside and Bal Harbour. In the City of Miami and most of the county, a room carries Florida's 6% sales tax and a 1% county surtax. Two county taxes add 6%: a 3% tourist development tax, sports franchise share included, and a 3% convention development tax.

Miami Beach skips the county tourist development tax but keeps the convention tax. It adds its own 4% resort tax, built in steps: 2% from 1968, one more point in 1996 and another in December 2015. Surfside and Bal Harbour have a 4% resort tax and neither county tax. All these rates apply to stays of six months or less.

Does the price on StaySats include tourist taxes?

Taxes and mandatory fees are in the price when the hotel publishes them. A charge you pay to someone else is not, such as Bali's levy, which goes to the province. A tax the hotel collects at the desk, like Tokyo's or Lisbon's, may also be left out of the price shown.

We book on request. The final total, local taxes included when the hotel publishes them, is confirmed before you are charged. A tax paid at the hotel is confirmed with your booking, so you know about it before you travel. The deposit for extras is a separate matter: see our hotel incidental hold guide. The price rule is on pricing, and the steps are on how it works.

How did we build this table?

We read each city's rules on October 13, 2026, on a tax authority or government page, or in the law itself. For each city, we noted the tax, the amount, how it is charged and who collects it, with the page address. Press articles served only to date announced changes, such as the Bangkok draft.

  • One row per city of our guides: Bali and Tokyo first, then Europe, the Americas and Asia.
  • Not verified: Dubai's Tourism Dirham amounts. Its legislation portal did not load, and we found no other official page with them. The row keeps only what search extracts of the official resolutions show: a charge per room and per night, 30 nights at most.
  • Not verified: the hotel tax rates of Badung and Gianyar in Bali. Their official pages refused the connection or showed a bot check, so we give the 10% cap only.
  • Japan: Kanazawa's 2026 handbook was not found, so its row is marked not verified for 2026. Niseko's current amounts are not detailed on the pages we read.

What are the limits of this data?

Tax rules change by decision, sometimes at short notice. Istanbul's 1% rate ends on December 31, 2026, and Niseko moves to 3% on November 1, 2026. Each row carries the date of our check, so look at it before you quote a rate. Hotels may also add a service charge or a resort fee, which are not taxes.

This page is information, not tax advice. We sell hotel bookings paid in crypto, which is why every row links to an official page. Corrections are welcome through our contact page. Written by the StaySats research desk, TravelGoat LLC.

Hotel and tourist taxes: questions

Where do you pay the tourist levy in Bali?

Online before the trip is what the province advises, on the Love Bali website or app. You can also pay at counters in Bali's airport and port, or on departure. During your stay, registered endpoints take it too: some hotels, travel agents and attractions. Each payment goes through the Love Bali system to the province.

Is the Bali tourist levy charged per night?

No. It is a flat IDR 150,000 per person for each entry into Bali, whatever the length of the stay. One payment stays valid until you leave Indonesia. If you leave the country and come back to Bali, you pay again. The hotel tax is different: it is a share of every night's price.

What happens if a tourist does not pay the Bali levy?

The regulation sets administrative steps, not fines. An officer can give an oral or written warning, and the tourist can be refused service at tourist attractions. Officers scan vouchers or passports at arrival gates, at endpoints and in occasional checks. Keep your QR voucher until you leave Indonesia.

What will the Tokyo accommodation tax be from April 2027?

3% of the room-only price per person per night, from April 1, 2027. Stays under ¥13,000 per person are exempt. Above that line, the whole price is taxed, so a ¥13,000 night costs ¥390 in tax (our calculation). Until March 31, 2027, the tax stays at ¥100 or ¥200, and nothing under ¥10,000.

Do children pay hotel tourist taxes?

It depends on the city. Paris exempts minors on proof of age, and Lisbon taxes guests from age 13. Tokyo has no age rule, so a child pays when the price per person reaches ¥10,000. Bali's levy names no age exemption. England's planned levy would exempt lodging types, not visitors.

Is the tourist tax included in a prepaid hotel booking?

Not always. Osaka Prefecture warns that a price prepaid on a booking site may leave its tax out. Hong Kong lets a hotel collect its 3% tax at check-in when the booking site did not. With StaySats, the final total is confirmed before you are charged, and a tax paid at the hotel is confirmed with your booking.

Can I republish these tax figures?

Yes, under CC BY 4.0: you may copy, adapt and reuse the table, also for commercial work. Credit "StaySats, Hotel Taxes by City, checked October 13, 2026" and link to this page. For a single city, also link its official source, because tax rates change by decision.
