Where to stay in London?
Choose an area near an Underground or Elizabeth line station: it matters more than the exact distance.
- Westminster and the West End: Trafalgar Square, theatres, Covent Garden and Soho; the most central choice.
- Kensington and Knightsbridge: the museums of South Kensington and Hyde Park, on the Piccadilly line to Heathrow.
- Paddington: terminus of the Heathrow Express, 15 minutes from Terminals 2 and 3; practical for an early departure.
- King's Cross and St Pancras: a rail hub served by six Underground lines.
- The City and Shoreditch: the financial district and its eastern neighbour; Liverpool Street has the Elizabeth line and the Stansted Express.
- South Bank and London Bridge: along the Thames, near Borough Market and Tate Modern.
What is added to the bill in London?
No tourist tax, for now. London has no city tax on hotel stays as of October 2026. On September 10, 2026, the UK government published its response to a consultation on an overnight visitor levy in England. Mayors, including the Mayor of London, will be able to set one as a percentage of the accommodation cost. A new law is needed first, and London would also need its own consultation.
Room prices include 20% VAT, so the tax is part of the hotel's price. On StaySats, we confirm the final total, taxes included, before you are charged. Breakfast, parking and extras are charged by the hotel unless the rate includes them. If London introduces a levy, it will be confirmed with your booking.
Will the hotel ask for my passport or a deposit?
UK law requires a hotel to record every guest aged 16 or over: full name and nationality. Guests who are not British, Irish or Commonwealth citizens also give their passport number and place of issue. When they leave, they give their next destination (Immigration (Hotel Records) Order 1972, article 4). Bring the passport you travel with.
Many London hotels also ask for a card or cash deposit for extras, even on a prepaid room. StaySats sends the hotel only the lead guest's name. Without a credit card, read check-in without a credit card.
Is paying in crypto legal in the UK?
No local ban found in our sources (checked October 12, 2026). We found no UK rule that stops a hotel from accepting crypto, but few hotels offer it. Booking ahead is the simple route: you pay StaySats in crypto, and we pay the hotel in pounds.
Tax can still apply. HM Revenue and Customs lists using cryptoassets to pay for goods or services as a disposal that may lead to Capital Gains Tax. Paying in crypto may be a taxable event in your country. Check local rules.
How do you get from Heathrow to central London?
Heathrow Express runs to Paddington in 15 minutes from Terminals 2 and 3, and about 6 minutes more from Terminal 5. The Elizabeth line and the Piccadilly line also serve Heathrow, more slowly. Heathrow is about 23 km from Trafalgar Square in a straight line.
The other airports are further out, except London City (LCY), about 13 km east of Trafalgar Square. Gatwick is about 40 km south and Stansted about 49 km north-east.

Because the Immigration (Hotel Records) Order 1972 requires it. Every guest aged 16 or over gives a full name and nationality. Guests who are not British, Irish or Commonwealth citizens also give their passport number and place of issue. The hotel keeps this record; StaySats does not collect it.

Is paying for a London hotel in crypto taxable?
It can be. In the UK, HM Revenue and Customs counts using cryptoassets to pay for goods or services as a disposal. That may mean Capital Gains Tax on any gain. Rules depend on where you are tax resident. Paying in crypto may be a taxable event in your country; StaySats does not give tax advice.
