Row of our crypto acceptance index. Expedia's help page on stay payments, read on October 13, 2026, names no crypto method.
Does Expedia accept bitcoin in 2026?
No. Bitcoin has not been an Expedia payment method since 2018, and we found no newer crypto option. On October 13, 2026, Expedia's help page on payment options for stays named no crypto method. For Pay now, it says only that different forms of payment are available at checkout. We did not find any announcement of a return of crypto payments in the press either.
Articles that still say "Expedia accepts bitcoin" usually date from 2014 to 2017. Check the date before you trust one.
When did Expedia accept bitcoin, and when did it stop?

Sources disagree on the exact end date: we show both dates instead of choosing one.
Why did Expedia stop accepting bitcoin?
Expedia gave one short reason. Its spokesperson said the company could not offer the best experience to customers paying with bitcoin, and that it would keep looking at payment options.
Forum comments quoted by news.Bitcoin.com linked the end to changes in the services Coinbase offered to merchants. That is a guess reported by the press, not an Expedia statement.
Can I pay for Expedia with the Global Hotel Card by Expedia?
No. This card is sold for crypto by gift card resellers, and its name suggests Expedia, but it is booked on its own website. On October 12, 2026, the reseller's product page said that stays are booked online only at globalhotelcard.com. The US card works only in the United States.
An older reseller guide from August 2022 described redeeming it at Expedia checkout. The current product page says otherwise, and a buyer review on it warns that the card is not for expedia.com. We found no Expedia gift card sold for crypto for use on expedia.com itself.
Can I pay for Expedia with a crypto card?
Probably, because Expedia sees a normal Visa or Mastercard. A crypto card sells your coins at the moment of payment. It is the only route we found that pays expedia.com from crypto.
Refunds are the weak point. If the hotel cancels or you cancel a refundable rate, the money goes back to the card in dollars or euros, not in crypto. Card issuers also add conversion costs and usually check your ID before they issue a card. Paying in crypto may be a taxable event in your country. Check local rules.
Can a hotel I found on Expedia ask me to pay in crypto?
Not for the booking itself. Expedia Group's Off-Platform Booking Policy applies to any vacation rental or hotel booked on any Expedia Group brand. It forbids asking, encouraging or agreeing to move a reservation or a payment off the platform.
The policy allows hotels to collect some charges directly, such as incidentals, and taxes where the law requires it. A booking moved off the platform loses Expedia's benefits and support. If a host or hotel asks you for a crypto payment instead of the booking on Expedia, contact Expedia support.
How do I book a hotel with bitcoin instead?
Use StaySats, which takes bitcoin and five other coins directly. Top up from $25; BTC is credited after 2 confirmations. Then search a city and pick a room.
At checkout, the total is held on your balance. We book the room on request and confirm the final total with the hotel. Your balance is charged only when the hotel confirmation number is issued. If we can't confirm, the amount is released at once. If the hotel can't host you, you choose USDT or USDC within 7 days of your request, or balance credit. That is a refund in stablecoins, not in card money. Details: pay for a hotel with bitcoin, refunds and how it works.
Expedia and crypto: questions
When did Expedia stop accepting bitcoin?
In 2018. An Expedia spokesperson told the press that bitcoin was no longer supported as of May 10, 2018. Customers reported that the option disappeared on June 10, 2018. Expedia had accepted bitcoin for hotel bookings since June 11, 2014, through Coinbase.
Why do some articles still say Expedia accepts bitcoin?
Because many were written between 2014 and 2017, when Expedia took bitcoin for hotel bookings through Coinbase. The option ended in 2018. Check the date of any article, and look for a link to an Expedia page. As of October 12, 2026, we found no crypto method on Expedia.
Will Expedia accept crypto again?
We found no announcement as of October 12, 2026. Expedia said in 2018 that it would keep evaluating payment options. We review this row every month in our acceptance index and change it only on an official announcement or a working option at checkout.
Can you book Expedia without a credit card?
It depends on the option. Pay now charges the full price at booking. Expedia's help pages say Reserve now, pay later needs a card, charged on a set date. Some hotels offer book now, pay later: you pay them at check-in or check-out. They may hold a card or take an early deposit. More: booking without a credit card.
Can I book Expedia hotels with crypto on Travala?
Travala, a separate crypto travel site, added more than 700,000 properties from Expedia Partner Solutions in July 2020. A booking made there follows Travala's checkout and refund rules, not Expedia's. We did not check whether this supply deal still runs. Travala signed a similar deal in 2019 for Booking.com listings. For other crypto hotel sites, see alternatives to Travala.
Does Hotels.com accept crypto, since it belongs to Expedia Group?
No. We found no crypto method on Hotels.com either, and its pages showed a bot check to our browser on October 12, 2026. A Hotels.com USD gift card bought with crypto works on the Hotels.com US site for Pay Now bookings. Details and limits: does Hotels.com accept crypto?
What is the Global Hotel Card by Expedia, then?
A hotel gift card sold by crypto gift card resellers and booked on its own website, globalhotelcard.com. The reseller's US page lists cards from $50 to $500 and allows up to 4 cards per reservation. Buy it only if you plan to book on that site, and read its cancellation rules first.
Does StaySats refund in crypto?
Yes, when the hotel is at fault. If the hotel can't host you, you get 100% of the stay back. You choose USDT or USDC within 7 days of your request, or balance credit. If you cancel a refundable rate, the hotel's refund goes back to your balance. Refunds.
