No, not as a payment to a shop or a hotel. Not allowed: Crypto may not be used to pay for goods or services: central bank ban in force since 2021-04-30. Where to stay in Istanbul?

Istanbul spans two continents, so choose your side of the Bosphorus first.

  • Sultanahmet: the old city with Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace, on the T1 tram.
  • Beyoğlu and Taksim: İstiklal Avenue, Galata Tower and nightlife; the M2 metro stops at Taksim.
  • Karaköy and Galata: the waterfront on the Golden Horn, between the old city and Beyoğlu, with ferry piers.
  • Beşiktaş and Nişantaşı: the Bosphorus shore with Dolmabahçe Palace, and upscale shopping streets inland.
  • Şişli and Levent: business districts along the M2 line; Gayrettepe has the M11 metro to Istanbul Airport.
  • Kadıköy: a lively district on the Asian side, closer to Sabiha Gökçen, with ferries to Karaköy and Eminönü.

What is added to the bill in Istanbul?

Turkey's accommodation tax, charged by the hotel on the price of each night. It is 1% until December 31, 2026, after Presidential Decision 11263 published on May 1, 2026; it was 2% before. We found no announcement of the rate for 2027 yet.

On StaySats, taxes are part of the hotel's price when the hotel publishes them. We confirm the final total, taxes included, before you are charged. When the hotel collects a tax itself, it is confirmed with your booking. Extras are billed by the hotel in lira.

Will the hotel ask for my passport or a deposit?

Yes, bring your passport. Under Law 1774 on Identity Notification, hotels must record the identity and the arrival and departure of every guest, Turkish or foreign. They must keep these records available to the police. Hotels send these records through the police notification system, so the desk scans your passport at check-in.

A deposit for extras is each hotel's own policy, by card or in cash. StaySats sends the hotel only the lead guest's name and asks for no ID upload at checkout. See hotel ID rules by country.

How do you get from the airports to the centre?

Istanbul Airport (IST), on the European side, is about 34 km from Taksim Square and about 36 km from Sultanahmet in a straight line. The M11 metro links it to Gayrettepe, where you change to the M2 line for Taksim.

Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side, about 26 km from Kadıköy and about 30 km from Sultanahmet in a straight line. If you land at Sabiha Gökçen, a hotel in Kadıköy or on the Asian shore keeps the transfer short.
