Can I pay a Seoul hotel in crypto at the front desk?

Almost never, from what public data shows. BTC Map lists 32 places within 25 km of central Seoul, 0 of them hotels (October 12, 2026). 15 of those places were verified in 2025 or later. Still, a listing is not a promise that a place takes crypto today.

Gimpo is closer: about 18 km in a straight line from the city centre point we use, against about 49 km for Incheon. Most long-haul arrivals use Incheon, and Gimpo mainly serves domestic and short regional routes.

The AREX airport railway links both airports to Seoul Station, with express trains and all-stop trains. All-stop trains also call at Hongik University and Gongdeok. A hotel near Seoul Station, Gongdeok or Hongik University station saves you a transfer with luggage. For Gangnam, plan a change to the subway or a taxi.

Can I get the VAT back on a Seoul hotel?

Sometimes. South Korea runs a VAT refund for foreign tourists who stay in hotels designated each quarter by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The ministry published its call for fourth-quarter 2026 designations on September 4, 2026, so the scheme was running at the time of our check.

Only designated hotels qualify, and the refund goes through the hotel's own process with a refund operator. Ask the hotel, before you book, whether a stay prepaid through StaySats qualifies. Do not count on the refund until the hotel confirms it.

Which Seoul district should I stay in?

Seoul is large, so pick a district by what you will do most:

• Myeong-dong and Jung-gu: shopping streets between Seoul Station and Namsan, convenient for the AREX.
• Jongno and Gwanghwamun: Gyeongbokgung Palace, Insadong and the old centre.
• Hongdae (Mapo): cafés and nightlife around Hongik University station, an AREX stop.
• Gangnam: the business district south of the Han River, with the COEX convention centre in Samseong.
• Itaewon and Yongsan: international restaurants and the National Museum of Korea.
• Dongdaemun: night markets and the Dongdaemun Design Plaza.
• Yeouido: the finance district, next to Han River parks.

Will a Seoul hotel ask for my passport?

Expect it. Hotels in Seoul ask foreign guests to show a passport at check-in, and often a card or a cash deposit for extras. We send the hotel only the lead guest's name. There is no ID upload and no selfie at our checkout.

Write the lead guest's name exactly as on the passport. If you have no credit card, ask the hotel before arrival whether a cash deposit works. Rules by hotel group are on check-in without a credit card.

Can I stay in Seoul for months on a crypto balance?

Yes, if your visa allows it. South Korea's workation visa (F-1-D) is for people employed by, or owning, a foreign company for more than one year. A Korean embassy page dated January 1, 2026 sets the income at more than twice the previous year's GNI per capita. That was KRW 52,416,000 for 2025, and the stay lasts up to one year. The press reported changes to the visa in July 2026, so confirm with the Korea Immigration Service.
