Quick answer
Is it safe to book a hotel with crypto?
Yes, if you check the seller and the payment before you send. The real risks of booking a hotel with crypto are a wrong network, a fake site, credit-only refunds, price changes, local bans and tax. StaySats names its company and publishes its refund form. A stay is held, not charged, until the hotel confirms; top-ups start at $25.
Safety facts to check, with StaySats as an example
| Company named | TravelGoat LLC (United States) |
|---|---|
| Networks named per coin | Yes: one page per coin and network (7 pages) |
| Payment for a booking | Held, not charged, until the hotel confirmation number is issued |
| Refund when the hotel cancels | USDT or USDC within 7 days of your request, or balance credit if you choose it |
| Price rule | the price found live for your dates, in US dollars, for the whole stay. Taxes and fees are included when the hotel publishes them; the final total is confirmed with the hotel before you are charged |
| Documents asked | None: no ID upload, no selfie; the hotel checks ID at check-in |
| Places we can't sell | Published, with the reason for each |
| Reviews or ratings shown | None: we publish facts, not ratings |
Can I lose my crypto by sending it on the wrong network?
Yes, and it is the most common way to lose money. USDT exists on many networks, and Tether lists 13 of them as supported (checked October 12, 2026). A transfer sent on one network stays on that network and is not credited, even when the address looks valid.
Protect yourself: on the withdrawal screen of your exchange, choose the network named on the payment page. If you are unsure, send a small top-up first. How StaySats handles it: each coin page names one network per address and lists the networks we don't accept. USDT: TRC-20 or ERC-20?
How do I spot a fake crypto travel site?
Check who is behind it before you send anything. A real seller names its company and country, publishes terms with a date, and states how a crypto payment is refunded. Be careful with sites that promise large discounts without explaining them, or that ask you to pay a personal wallet address sent by chat.
No real seller needs your seed phrase, your account number or a selfie sent by chat. We never ask for your account number, a passport scan or a selfie by email or chat. Company, country, coins and refund form of each crypto travel seller: crypto travel seller registry.
Will I get my money back, or only site credit?
It depends on the seller, so read the refund rule before you pay. As of October 2026, per its help page, Travala refunds a crypto payment as Travel Credits. They are usable only on Travala and not convertible to cash or crypto. Payments made through Binance Pay come back in USDT. Other sellers refund in crypto, in fiat money or as site credit, per their own pages.
How StaySats handles it: in three cases, the money can be withdrawn in USDT or USDC. They are a failed booking, a declined price increase and a hotel that can't host you. Only a cancellation you choose yourself comes back as balance credit. Refunds compared.
What if the price changes after I pay?
On some sites, the payment is taken first and the booking is attempted after, which leaves you exposed if the rate disappears. Ask the seller what happens to your money in that case, and how fast.
How StaySats handles it: at checkout the total is held, not charged. Bookings are made on request, so we confirm the final total with the hotel first. If it is higher, you accept the new total or have the full amount released. If we cannot confirm in time, the amount is released at once. How it works.
Is it legal to pay for a hotel in crypto?
It depends on where you are. Some countries ban paying in crypto on their territory; we list the ones we found, with sources. Indonesia, including Bali, and Turkey ban crypto payments for goods and services; Thailand restricts them; mainland China bans crypto activity. Paying a hotel at the desk in crypto there can break local law.
How StaySats handles it: you pay StaySats in crypto, and we pay the hotel in local currency. You pay extras at the hotel in local money or by card. If you live in a country with such a ban, check whether it also covers paying us from there. Where we can't sell hotels.
Do I owe tax when I pay a hotel in crypto?
Possibly. Paying in crypto may be a taxable event in your country. Check local rules. Keep the transaction ID and the date of each top-up.
Stablecoins such as USDT and USDC are designed to track the US dollar. So the gap between what you paid for them and what you spend stays small. That is not tax advice.
Can the hotel refuse me at check-in?
It can if you cannot show valid ID, or if you do not meet its rules on deposits or minimum age. The hotel checks your ID at check-in, as local law requires, and may ask for a card or a cash deposit for extras. Paying ahead with StaySats does not remove the hotel's incidental deposit at check-in.
Protect yourself: enter the lead guest's name as on the ID, and read the hotel's deposit rule before you go. Check-in without a credit card and hotel ID rules.

Booking hotels with crypto safely: FAQ
Is crypto safer than a card for a hotel booking?
It is different. A card payment can be disputed through a chargeback; a blockchain transfer cannot be reversed. So with crypto, the seller's own refund rule is your protection. Read it before you pay, and prefer a seller that holds the amount until the booking is confirmed.
What is the safest coin to pay a hotel with?
The safest is the one you can send on the right network without mistakes. Stablecoins such as USDT and USDC keep a value close to the US dollar between top-up and booking. Whatever the coin, check the network on the payment page before you send.
Should I send a small test payment first?
If you are unsure about the network or the exchange screen, yes. On StaySats the minimum top-up is $25, so a first small top-up shows you the whole flow. Each top-up has its own exact amount, so start a new top-up for the main amount.
Can a crypto travel site freeze my funds?
Some sellers' terms allow it. As of October 2026, per its terms, Travala may ask for an ID check at any time and may freeze funds. Read the terms of any seller. On StaySats, bookings and withdrawals are refused when a sanctions check matches, as the law requires.
Is my hotel booking private if I pay in crypto?
Partly. No ID upload or selfie is needed at our checkout. But blockchain transfers are public, and the hotel receives the lead guest's name and checks ID on arrival. Private checkout is not the same as a hidden identity.
How do I know a site's crypto acceptance claims are true?
Look for a date and a source. Many lists repeat old facts, such as booking sites that stopped taking crypto years ago. Our acceptance index gives each status with the date of our check and a link to its source: who accepts crypto.
